Abstract
This study was attempted to investigate the effect of glutathione on subacute toxicity of the rat evoked by PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl ) which is presently used as an insulating material in various fields of the industry.
Experimental results obtained from the present study are as the following:
1) PCB produced dose-related decreased body weight and glutathione along with the increased s-rum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, serum triglyceride, cytochrome P450, an¢¥ also increased the weight of liver, spleen, kidney and thymus to body weight by comparing with th. corresponding control group.
2) The combined medication of PCB and cysteine which is known as a precursor of glutathione, and the improvement of these effects induced by a single administration of PCB.
3) The treatment of PCB with diethyl maleate, a depletor of glutathione in hepatic tissues, did exaggerate PCB-induced toxic effects.
These experimental data suggest that PCB causes toxic effects mediated by its metabolites prod ced by microsomal enzymes in hepatic cells, and that these toxicities may be closely related to glutath one levels in liver.
